UKlHow did you feel when you’ve heard you’ve won? CathI was thrilled. I’d never won anything in a competition before and to come second was a real personal achievement. It felt amazing for my photograph to be so highly commended. I was chuffed to bits! UKlWas this your first entry? CathYes. I’ve entered competitions in magazines before, but this was my first entry into both an international competition and one for the RHS. UKlHow many photos did you enter? CathJust the one – well, you had to pay £5 per entry and being a poor photographer, I have to watch the pennies! UKlTell us the story of the shot. CathI went to Westonbirt Arboretum on the advice of my boyfriend, who thought it would be a great location for me to build on my portfolio. He was right! I spent a day there, with the specific intention of photographing trees but with the goal of trying to create something different. This yew tree was one of many, but it had interesting shapes and beautiful colours which I could accentuate by getting in close. Not many people look so closely at trees and I did get a few strange looks and people asking what on earth I was looking at! But if you look closely at the photograph there are a few faces within the bark, looking back at you… UKlWhy did you enter this competition about trees and shrubs CathI saw the competition advertised in a magazine. There were several different categories but I immediately thought my yew tree photograph would fit the brief for the ‘tree or shrub’ category. UKlHow long have you been in photography? CathI’ve always loved photography, but it’s only really since 2002 that I’ve been taking my photography more seriously with a view to selling my work and making a career from it. UKlYour next project? CathMy next project is simply to sell enough of my work to turn pro.
